I'm more of the opinion that they're trying to appeal to the 80's kids that remember the cartoon, or at least having fun referencing that particular D&D.

I have no doubt that they're going to keep pushing FR. I'd think that they'd use Greyhawk to show how a DM can keep it grounded if you don't want your players to be things like Kenku Spore Wardens.
I like the idea that the books may tag things as core classes and races.

I'm pretty sure for the majority of people what defines male or female rests between the legs, and that wasn't depicted.
It's not a man or a woman. It's a bit of art that was used in a commercial product. It's a player's character at best. For Larry, it can be a man, and for everyone else, it's whoever they want it to be.
Being entirely serious, I think Wizkids/WotC took fantastic artistic license there, and they could have also done two versions of the mini. Honestly, it's beefy enough that they probably would have had to give it a beard to make it seem more masculine. As it is, it can just be male with huge pecs.
Lol. I was wondering why I bothered with the 5e version of it instead of just the DCC version. Considering seeing if I can sell it and some of the other 5e things I kickstarted.
In that 3rd paragraph, I suspect that most people fail to understand the difference and aren't interested in learning the difference anyway.
