The real question is: Why make this? What attracts you to the setting? Is it the cultures that inspired the tropes or is it the tropes?

I would expect that how "the same" the material was would be the deciding factor. While the connection the creators have to cultural inspirations do matter a good deal, in an ideal world, they are also knowledgeable.

It will be challenging to square the circle of engaging in the cultural sources respectfully while still trying to call back to the old material. If you have to make only one side truly happy, better to err on respecting cultural sources. It is future proofing if you think about it.

For me, the species in the PHB are meant to be default ones, both as choices for PCs but also for NPC cultures that are expected to be encountered and interacted with. What I am more curious about is not so much how it will impact players but GMs and worldbuilding going forward.

Just to weigh in, for me, its the size of individual books. Buying a 500+ tome just isnt a turn on for me these days. I'd rather that be spread among 2-3, hell 4 separate releases.
