I'm really enjoying my SIM Settlements 2 play through. The mod integrates well into the main game, the new ways of managing settlements are different enough to feel fresh, and frankly the story missions are significantly more compelling than the main game storyline.

Yes, it is. Characters travelling between settlements are subject to the same dangers of the wastes as you are - but only if the cells they're walking through are currently loaded in (i.e. you're nearby). If you stay clear of the path between the two settlements, they should be fine.
