Rent and staffing costs I'm guessing. I live in the "poor" part of NZ. Slumming it up. Movies fairly cheap here. Similar in price to 20 years ago. Parking easy except maybe weekend/Friday night (5 minute walk vs 2).

They didn't have much choice though. 12 super hero movies and something like 6 blockbusters back to back that summer. I don't think it was the biggest factor but one of the contributing ones.

I was expected to be a hit but maybe not a billion dollar hit. John Wick 4 was the biggest BO of the franchise. Once again expected to do well maybe not as big as it was. Prime examples of a prime IP and one building up from smaller, modest beginnings.

This you need a cheaper successful lead in movie. MCU, Star Wars, Terminator....... There's probably more examples.

They might gave to start taking a % cut of the gross and a smaller up front payment. He highlights ticket prices. Throw in pRking etc it's really expensive. He can get a steak dinner and drinks vs movie tickets. Here it's around $10 usd for the ticket. Parking free, 5-10 minute drive...

You can also use less cgi or be subtle about it eg Forest Gump. Animated Spiderman movies also had a good ratio. Tge reason the budgets have blown out billion dollar movies still have a better return than numerous smaller ones. But they're the exception not the rule still.

They're also notorious for labour exploitation in that sector.

Netflix is our forever streamer similar reason. Also bundled with ISP. Amazon and Disney might become floaters. See how the Acolyte is and Amazon recently have us new season of Clarksons Farm and Fallout with new season of The Boys around the corner. It's also cheap and movie back catalog.
