D&D General What makes a good Adventure

I'm sure you'll get some really great specific bullet-point lists and examples (e.g. Chris Perkins would say "hook, villain, great map"), but I want to answer your question at a very high theoretical / paradigmatic level. A good adventure needs to know itself – it needs to know what it IS and...

D&D General (SPOILERS for Vecna: Eve of Ruin) Are My Standards Too High for Adventures?

Part of the challenge with for-sale adventures is that it's a lot of design work for a relatively small pay-off. I'd say that any adventure is going to limit your audience more so than other material because it may just not be to someone's tastes or outside their level range. That's just part of...

(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

GM POST Shaking his head, white beard wagging, Brydum gazes about the ruined temple as he speaks, "I may carry my grandfather Dorn Black Axe's holy symbol, but I never was one o' Dumathoin's priests. They kept their secrets closely guarded...during holy days the priests would seem to appear...

D&D General (SPOILERS for Vecna: Eve of Ruin) Are My Standards Too High for Adventures?

I don’t think WotC’s D&D adventures have ever set a good standard. My view is that really good adventures from WotC are outliers. If you want good D&D 5e adventures that don’t require a ton of editing/modifying, it’s just better to look to other other publishers.

(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

GM POST Sure enough the pebble passes through the bas relief with a faint shimmer and the sound of it clattering on the stone floor beyond is audible. Peeking through the illusory bas relief reveals the corridor continues wrapping around...but comes to another dead end. This one strewn with...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

I've run up to 12th/13th level in 5e. In my experience, there are 3 sorts of interventions I use for making fights more challenging, mapping to: 1. Interventions based on specifics of the Encounter 2. Interventions based on builds/tactics of the Party 3. Interventions based on general concerns...

(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

Angrom receives the silver chalice from Jack with a solemn nod, but then can't resist the urge to sniff it to see what alcohol might have been used. "Well, I'll need my hands to carry Rurm's litter, Frosty Sprite. I could use one other pair of hands to lift the other end...? Those of us with the...

(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

The Silver Chalice – still resting in the statue's hands (as Alma has not removed it) – is engraved with weathered Dethek runes common to dwarves and gnomes: "Dain Dorn Blackaxe unveils Dumathoin’s secrets to whoever is bold enough to sound his horn." In all other respects it appears to be a...

(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

Angrom strokes his beard and scratches his head, hmms and ahhs, as he studies the scroll, "To be honest Miss Ostergaard, the clergy of Dumathoin were a secretive lot. When we weren't fighting zombies, I scarcely ventured within the temple save for the holy days. It's something about protection –...
