I thought there was something goofy about the cover of Miskatonic U and now that you brought that up it suddenly makes some sense. I skipped it initially because I saw the cover in a thumbnail image and thought the 1920s was actually the 1990s. That cover does not scream Roaring '20s to me.
Switching suddenly from GoT to Thundarr the Barbarian isn't recommended due to the extreme risk of tonal whiplash. I do accept that alignment is no longer a meaningful part of D&D and hasn't been for 14 years now.

Familiarity breeds contempt. It's tough for anything to seem magical when they've been a regular part of the game for the last 50 years. We see similar problems with the various beings in Call of Cthulhu. Oooh, deep ones? I'm so scared.
Historically speaking, a necromancer didn't raise the dead. They communicated with the dead, or with spirits, or even with demons but they didn't bring life to the dead. It's wholly appropriate for them to be Wizards instead of Clerics.
