D&D 5E Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Given @ezo's table earlier and how powerful build disconnects us from our fantasy wouldn't the fix be to increase the damage (at the minimum) for creatures you'd expect to be mountains stronger than our 5-7 foot PCs? I look at the STR of giants and others and it just seems pitiful... EDIT: An...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

IMO we don't get much of the Arthurian Knights because of the limited mechanics within D&D which are focused predominantly in the combat pillar, some in exploration pillar and little to nothing for social. We had Alignment but that proved to be a poor mechanic. They introduced Ideals, Bonds and...

    D&D 5E Running 5e at high Levels

One way we which has helped our table with THIS particular issue is to have each player declare their actions BEFORE initiative is rolled and initiative is rolled EVERY round. Having tested this system out for 1-2 years our table will never go back to static initiative. Combat is so much more...

    D&D 5E Running 5e at high Levels

I'm playing high levels currently 12+ for 2 years (currently 15th) I'd say it's a combination of hp bloat + options on both sides of the table. But our table meets in person and it's a whole day affair (6 hours minimum) - somewhat social + meal. I'm not sure that is the norm here.

    D&D 5E Running 5e at high Levels

I understand. Nothing published like that exists which is why I and others have created systems where HD spend gives one access to spells and abilities. Which is also why I mentioned Travel Rests as our in between which recovers 1/2 one's HD.

How Do You Feel About Published Adventures as a GM?

When I use published material, it is to provide a base and then I generally merge it with my own ideas, online ideas and further published material to provide my ideal version of a sandbox for a campaign. (Our ToD campaign has merged with 5 other AP's, 3 stand-alone modules, 2 Adventure Leagues...

    D&D 5E Running 5e at high Levels

The dirty solution is to 1/2 Hit Points across the board.

    D&D 5E Running 5e at high Levels

We have the Travel Rest which recovers 1/2 HD but then we have abilities that can be sourced by HD and Exhaustion levels (the latter in desperate situations).

    D&D 5E Running 5e at high Levels

Run only combats that are (i) interesting, (ii) push the story and (iii) there are stakes involved. Try include less attrition-based combats. Attrition combats could be converted to Skill Challenges with stakes laid bare up-front, Fail Forward, Success with Complications Design your own...

    D&D (2024) 75 Feats -- not nearly enough

Long Live Pathfinder! Another option is they became DMs to fix the continued bad design by WotC. One cannot moan about anti-Min/Maxxers without acknowledging also that elements of poor design exist within the game.

D&D 5E Best Way to Challenge this Sorcadin, without high level spells

Not sure if these have been mentioned Unhallowed ground which negates their Paladin auras Anti-magic terrain Sunder their armour + shields with the help of large/huge beasts OR Disarm their shields Introduce Sanity for the weird and wonderful experiences which could incur trauma + madness...

    D&D 5E Shadowdark casting in standard 5E

Understood. Perhaps I misunderstood. It's a HD per spell level right? So a Haste = 3 HD? So a Wish is 9 HD? One thing I forgot to mention is that if you run out of HD in our system you can incur exhaustion levels on a 1HD 1 Exhaustion level basis. Thus emulating the fictional pushing oneself...

    D&D 5E Shadowdark casting in standard 5E

At the outset we have something similar with HD expenditure but our cost structure is very different. It is based on required level, so for instance an Action Surge of 1st, 5th and 11th would cost differently. I've also recently started using HD expenditure for opponents/monsters too. PCs at our...
