For my own taste, I prefer that DM keep things basic and simple. Complex plot, twisted agenda, numerous npcs, that are all good for a movie or books. In a game experience, crucial elements can be separated by months real life. For the DM it is a crucial Npc for the players it is a vague memory...

I can imagine a Ranger subclass under both Fighter and Rogue. Same for the Bard.

Fighter with sub classes Ranger, paladin, artificer, monk, barbarian, warlock hex blade. Cleric, with sub classes druid Rogue Wizard with sub classes sorcerer, warlock fiend, witch and other. Bard will stay a bizarre matchup of fighter, rogue, wizard and others.

When I place a big city I force myself to figure out, how they feed? How they get ressources? My rule of thumb is that a big city need x10 rural population, village and small town to feed it.
