It's the brush stroke style that makes it fuzzy or blurry looking. The mage's position is very unclear, it almost looks like she's beside and in front of the beholder at the same time. Plus how is she casting spells while within the monster's anti-magic cone? Minsc's sight line isn't looking at...

The style is too blurry and washed out. Same complaint for the other two covers. Also the characters are always in some weird pose facing in an odd direction instead of facing their enemy. IMO the Pathfinder covers blow these out of the water both in their art style and composition.

I'm preferential to the 3.5e dragon designs myself, those really hit it out of the park.

Yeah... I'm not sure WotC has any writers left with enough talent to hit that bar. Aren't most combats in 4e and 5e just HP slug fests? I too would have expected a lower grade than an A- as well. Perhaps a C+ or at most a B- would be more reasonable?

I've had a much different experience DM'ing 3.5e. Maybe it's because I know the rules by heart and most of the quibbles with it can be addressed by plugging in Pathfinder changes. I dunno, but I like how it scales a lot better than 5e does, and I love the plethora of options for it.

I didn't even notice they had that on the cover. That knocks this one down to my least favorite cover.

Yeah the 3.5e books are my faves as well. For the cover AND the edition.
